Building Spaces for Authentic Connection

Topaz’s work revolves around creating environments where vulnerability and connection can flourish. He believes the context of interaction is crucial‌ — ‌just like rooms in a house serve different purposes, the spaces we create for conversations must be intentional.

“We don’t sleep in the kitchen, and we don’t cook in the bedroom. We have certain spaces where certain actions are permissible and are supported,” Topaz explains. By clearly defining these “rooms,” whether physical or metaphorical, we can set the stage for trust and understanding.

He adds, “By making clear demarcations, clear language of like, ‘Hey, okay, being human… this is where I’m at,’” we can foster honesty while maintaining focus. This is a critical balance for HR leaders to achieve when navigating the complexities of workplace dynamics.

Listening as the Antidote to Polarization

In a world inundated with opinions and noise, Topaz emphasizes the power of listening as a tool for bridging divides. “If you look at all the media that you get, it’s people telling you stuff, yelling at you… reinforcing your opinions. Very little of it is actually the practice of listening,” he notes.

His work challenges people to shift gears, creating content and experiences that invite participants to practice listening. This shift toward active listening can be a powerful lever for HR professionals striving to build inclusive and empathetic cultures in polarized times.

Deepening Relationships Through Meaningful Dialogue

The Skin Deep’s work demonstrates how storytelling and open dialogue can strengthen both personal and professional relationships. For Topaz, creating spaces for meaningful conversations isn’t just about personal growth‌ — ‌it’s also vital for workplace dynamics.

“It definitely works in like personal relationships, but it also works in the workplace, because at the end of the day, we spend a lot of time at work, and those work relationships are really important,” he explains. Whether it’s through team-building exercises or intentional check-ins, fostering connection among colleagues pays dividends in morale and productivity.

Topaz describes his projects as experiments designed to cultivate humanity and deepen understanding. “How do you cultivate humanity? How do you cultivate that sense of connection?”

This offers a compelling blueprint for fostering connection in all aspects of life. By creating intentional spaces, practicing active listening, and embracing meaningful dialogue, you can strengthen relationships and bridge divides—even in challenging times.
